"Brixton Rain" by Ballerina Black // Brixton Rain - Single (Available 5.5.14)

I feel like there’s been an absence of strong post-punk and new wave these past several months. I could be just looking in all the wrong places, but luckily I stumbling upon Los Angeles based Ballerina Black's killer new track, “Brixton Rain”. The track hits all of the check marks for what i've been looking for - crisp post punk rhythms, dark synth lines, eerie atmospherics, and a melody that gets lodged in your head for days. In some ways it sounds like the kind of song that could appear on a late 80's episode of 120 Minutes, but that’s not to say that it’s a rehash of familiar goth pop tropes. Ballerina Black capture that lost era with absolute confidence, and imbue their work with a new pulse that feels alive and exciting. I need more sounds like this in my life. Right now. Highest recommendation.

Ballerina Black, which consists of Bobby Moynahan, Esli Sugich (bass), Scott Eton (keyboards and guitar) and Romeo Mendzoa (drums), have been praised for a sound that has been described by many across the blogosphere as “a collage of mope rock and grave wave” with accessible melodies.  Granted, as music blogger, I have to admit that I don’t even know what grave wave is to properly assess it; however, as you’ll hear on their latest single “Brixton Rain,” their sound reminds me quite a bit of Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails — a slickly produced, buzzing, anxious goth-based electronica that’s also incredibly danceable, and possesses shimmering guitars and synths. (Interestingly, the band has opened for Interpol and for Silversun Pickups, both of which strike me as showing that this is a band whose profile is growing.)

The official video includes some gorgeously shot aerial footage, that is at times super-imposed over a dancing woman who appears to be slowly losing her mind. Oh and there’s birthday cake. It’s sexy, darkly surreal and yet very fitting.

Hi, we’ve been recording, playing shows and putting out our music for the past 6 1/2 years. We’ve recently completed our latest EP and received the opportunity to tour in the UK this upcoming May. Words cannot express how excited we are! We’ve always paid for all of our expenses and have been a DYI project from day one. This is the first time we are asking for help. We have paid for all of our flight costs and accommodations for the tour but need a van for a means of transportation to get to all of the venues to play in the UK. All of your donations mean the world to us and will help us make this dream come true.

Thank you for all of your love and support.

Best,
Ballerina Black
